Alliances and global competition

Mr. Horan will present his views on airline industry consolidation and its implications for consumer welfare. He argues that the intercontinental consolidation that has occurred since 2003 is fundamentally different from industry shifts in the 80's and 90's (deregulation and open skies). According to Mr. Horan, the post 2003 shifts have mainly reduced competition and have had negative implications for consumer welfare. Mr. Horan states that in intercontinental markets the benefits from the liberalizing reforms of the 80's and 90's have been lost and the current outlook for industry efficiency is negative. 
 
Mr. Horan's findings will be critically reviewed by two discussants. The first discussant of Mr. Horan's views will be Jan Veldhuis, air transport economist and program manager at Airneth. Jan Veldhuis will critically review Mr. Horan's conclusions based on the available empirical evidence on consolidation in the airline industry. The second discussant is dr. Mark Lijesen from VU University Amsterdam.
